Gavin Newsom’s 24/7 social media machine

These days you can find Gov. Gavin Newsom on just about any media platform.  With less than three months until he finishes his final term as California governor, you can catch Newsom on X picking fights with right-wing media, posting on Substack and interviewing guests on his podcast.  As a potential 2028 presidential hopeful, he’s…

Curated News BriefBased on original reporting by CalMatters Housing (October 15, 2026). The summary below is the Journal’s; the local analysis is original commentary by Omar Murillo.

According to reporting from CalMatters, Governor Gavin Newsom has built an extensive communications operation that keeps him constantly visible across social media platforms and digital channels. With his second term winding down and potential presidential ambitions on the horizon, the governor has become one of the Democratic Party's most active voices on outlets like X, Substack, and his own podcast. What's notable is that while he's everywhere online, he rarely engages directly with traditional journalists in Sacramento, and his agencies have become less responsive to media requests for interviews and information.

The size and scope of Newsom's communications team tell the story of how seriously he takes his digital presence. According to CalMatters, his press and communications staff has grown to twenty-four people, more than double what it was a few years into his first term. This team operates around the clock, handling everything from live-streaming events to creating memes and social media content. The operation includes dedicated roles like a photographer focused on visual messaging and four younger digital staffers who specialize in pop culture savvy posts for social platforms.

Critics argue that Newsom's approach to managing his public image crosses ethical lines. Republican strategist Rob Stutzman, who previously worked for Arnold Schwarzenegger, compares the governor's strategy to how President Trump has used his office as a political tool. CalMatters reports that Newsom's office has dismissed conservative writers as not being "real journalists," used AI-generated memes to mock Republicans, and even responded to a political rival with dismissive language on social media.

Separately, the federal Justice Department has escalated demands on California regarding voter registration, according to CalMatters. The administration claims to have evidence that noncitizens are registered to vote and has told state officials and Los Angeles County to review the information or face potential legal action. However, the letters did not specify how many noncitizens are allegedly on the rolls. CalMatters also noted that election fraud historically remains extremely rare, pointing to examples where other states have dramatically reduced their initial estimates of fraudulent registrations after reviewing the data.

On education, CalMatters reports that California students made modest gains on standardized tests this year, with math proficiency rising just above one percentage point and English language arts edging up slightly. Science scores showed more substantial improvement. However, the state continues to face enrollment challenges that threaten school funding, as the number of K-12 students declined by tens of thousands, and because California funds schools based on daily attendance, districts will receive less revenue.

What I am seeing locally in the Bay Area and across the East Bay is that these statewide conversations about communications strategy, voter registration, and school funding all touch on issues my clients care deeply about. When confidence in institutions fluctuates or when school districts face budget pressures, it affects neighborhood desirability and property values. Buyers and sellers are paying attention to how their local governments are performing and communicating, and these trends ripple through our real estate market in ways that matter.
