Ari Peskoe, who directs the Electricity Law Initiative at Harvard Law School, explained that the traditional utility business model spreads infrastructure costs across all customers in a service area. With data centers now consuming as much electricity as entire cities, utilities are spending billions to support this new demand. Peskoe cautioned against attributing every electricity price increase to data centers alone, acknowledging that multiple factors drive energy costs nationwide. He also pointed out that the data center industry itself remains uncertain, with massive investment projected but no guarantee these facilities will continue expanding indefinitely.
