Southern Land Company has made a significant leadership move by bringing on Tony Marchbanks as its national president of homebuilding operations, according to HousingWire. Marchbanks spent over three decades at Highland Homes, most recently serving as president and chief operating officer before making the jump. He'll be based out of Southern Land's Plano, Texas office and will oversee the full scope of homebuilding, from land development and construction to purchasing, sales, and architecture.
The company is positioned for growth right now. Southern Land currently operates master-planned communities across Tennessee, Texas, and Colorado, with more than five thousand lots either owned or in development across four active communities. The firm is also managing a project portfolio valued at eight billion dollars, giving Marchbanks plenty of opportunity to make an impact as the company looks to expand its reach into these markets.
Marchbanks brings real-world expertise that speaks to his track record. During his time at Highland Homes, he built the Houston division from scratch and grew it to producing around a thousand homes annually. Later, he oversaw statewide operations that were generating more than four thousand luxury homes per year, showing he understands how to scale operations effectively in the Texas market and beyond.
The company's leadership is clearly banking on his experience to fuel their next phase of growth. Tim Downey, founder and CEO, emphasized that homebuilding and community development sit at the heart of Southern Land's business model. Brian Sewell, the president and COO, noted that Marchbanks' Texas expertise will help drive expansion into both existing and newer markets as they build out their national pipeline.
What I am seeing locally here in the Bay Area and throughout the East Bay is that when national builders bring in veteran leadership like this, it usually signals they're preparing for a more aggressive push into new markets or a significant acceleration of their existing projects. While this particular hire is focused on Southern Land's operations in Texas, Colorado, and Tennessee, it's a reminder that the homebuilding industry continues to consolidate talent and capital around companies with clear growth trajectories.
